Author Greg Archer aims to wage war on dieting industry

Greg Archer, co-author of “Shut Up, Skinny B-----! The Common Sense Guide To Following Your Hunger and Your Heart,” will appear at Books Inc., 2275 Market St., on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Archer is a regular contributor to The San Francisco Examiner.

What was your primary inspiration for tackling this topic? We wanted to say “shut up” to the dieting and advertising industries, which have bombarded our culture with messages and images suggesting that the only way to achieve happiness is to get “skinny.” We aren’t taught to look beyond that; to look inside and address deeper emotional issues.

Can you recommend one daily ritual to help combat the psychological struggle with body image? Get in the habit of watching what you think — don’t judge it, just watch your actions around food and exercise.

Why do you think diets have been so popular? Most of society is addicted to their wants. They “want” to be thin. But at what cost? We point people toward exploring what’s behind their actions [in a fun way].
