Attempt under way to recall Maxwell

A vote to recall Supervisor Sophie Maxwell could appear on the June ballot.

Maxwell presides over District 10, which includes Potrero Hill, Bayview Hunters Point, Visitacion Valley, Dogpatch and the Portola districts.

The group Campaign to Recall Sophie Maxwell wants to oust the supervisor for a host of reasons. Among them, the group said, Maxwell has not “adequately” addressed “the economic out-migration and displacement of ethnically diverse low-income families,” asthma-related absenteeism at Bayview public schools, high eviction rates of low-income families and growing unemployment disparities in the district.

“She continues to ignore documented exceedences of toxic dust exposure in the Bayview Hunters Point community and beyond,” the group said in its filing to the San Francisco Department of Elections.

The group needs to gather 7,529 signatures, or 20-percent of District 10’s registered voters, before the end of the workday Monday.

DOE has less than 30 days to verify the signatures.

This isn’t the first time district residents have attempted to recall Maxwell. An attempt in 2004 was thwarted after DOE invalidated 973 signatures, including 875 that were signed by unregistered voters.

Maxwell has served as District 10 supervisor since 2001. She is termed out of office in January 2011.
