Asian community fears more Bayview Muni attacks

A series of random attacks against Asians riding Muni have led to a major community backlash in the Bayview District.

Muni and police have ramped up security around the T-Third line in the wake of at least three random attacks – one of which led to the death of an elderly Asian man on his way home to his sick wife.

At a Police Commission meeting this week at Grace Lutheran Church in the Portola District, several emotional members of the public pleaded for help from police and the public.

Marlene Tran, a spokeswoman for the Visitacion Valley Asians Alliance, said there is a lot of “fear and resentment” in the Asian community because so many use the public transit system and don’t feel safe.

“That could’ve been my grandfather,” said one man of the homicide victim, Huan Chen, 83. “I’m really heartbroken right now.”
