A's third baseman Josh Donaldson, the team's best all-around player all season, was out of the lineup on Sunday for just the third time all season, but the team is hopeful he will return today.

Donaldson incurred a right quad strain during Saturday's win over the Houston Astors.

He figured he'd be OK to play on Sunday, but the A's didn't give him that option. Manager Bob Melvin said he didn't even check with Donaldson on Sunday morning, he just went to the training staff and the decision was made to give Donaldson the day off, particularly with Oakland also off on Monday.

Melvin and Donaldson both believe that Donaldson will be fully ready to play today at Minnesota.

Donaldson hit second in the lineup the past two weeks, going 17-for-47 with eight doubles, two homers, seven RBIs and eight runs. It was his first stint in the No. 2 spot this year. Overall, Donaldson is leading the team with 82 RBIs and he is third on the team in homers with 21. His .297 average tops all A's regulars, and he is playing Gold Glove-caliber defense at third base.
