Hey Anita Dunn: Why would anyone pick a fight with Fox News? There's no winning that one. The viewers who love Fox News will just hate you, and those who don't were probably already with you anyway. It goes nowhere.

The blog has been trying to look away and change the subject from the Obama administration's fight with Fox News for days, thinking if we ignore it, it will go away. Works with pernicious suitors -- why not this? And anyway -- everyone knows the Gibbsnotist channels Barack Obama. Why is the marginalized White House communications director suddenly being heard from, anyway?

Then there was that piece about how our worthy friend, Fox News White House reporter Major Garrett, feels oppressed by the whole thing, and that was a little depressing:

"I feel the weight of this on my shoulders perpetually," he said, "and it makes my job harder."

Over the weekend, there was more tedious back-and-forth from the administration, urging journalists to boycott the mighty Fox News, which went around in high, excited dudgeon about the whole thing. Slate magazine contrarian-in-chief Jacob Weisberg (hot!) also sounded off, calling out NPR's Mara Liasson for going on Fox all the time. Weisberg's suggestion was to reduce the consequence of Fox News by ignoring them. Good luck with that.

Still we averted our eyes. It was all so unseemly! Then, those enterprising little ferrets at Fox News dug up some old video of Dunn from a January conference in the Dominican Republic, where she talked about Obama campaign media strategy.

Now we're steamed!

"One of the reasons we did so many of the David Plouffe videos was not just for our supporters, but also because it was a way for us to get our message out without having to actually talk to reporters," she said (emphasis added). "We just put that out there and made them write what Plouffe had said as opposed to Plouffe doing an interview with a reporter. So it was very much we controlled it as opposed to the press controlled it."

Right. Because when you are running on "transparency" and more to the point, "accountability," it's just a pesky time-waster having to actually talk to reporters, about policy and positions and whatnot. Better to just issue a video press release and refuse their quarrelsome little entreaties! They should be grateful for that much!

See? Now the blog is all hot under the collar. Mission accomplished, Fox News and the White House -- we are officially emotionally involved in your little, go-nowhere spat.

The strategy "did not always make us popular in the press," Dunn said.

Oh, really?
