Another candidate for SF’s dumbest criminal

A woman was sipping coffee and texting at the Peets on Third and Mission streets Tuesday at about 3:30 p.m. when a thief snatched her phone and took off down the street.

The woman, not willing to give up her prized smart phone so easily, chased after the suspect, according to officers over at the Southern Police Station. While the thief got away, he dropped a phone during his escape.

But it wasn’t the victim’s phone. It was his own.

The next day, “Sgt. Caturay, Inspector Obot and Officer Landi were investigating the case when the phone rang. Insp. Obot answered the suspect’s phone. The suspect told the Inspector that he would give him $10.00 and another phone [yes, the victim’s phone] for his phone in return,” according to police.

Needless to say, the officers noticed a golden opportunity and set up a meeting with the man, who ended up spending the night in county lockup.

And of course the officers over at Southern Station would like to remind you to be aware of your surroundings.
