Animal commission looks at banning sales of small pets

Hundreds of gerbils, rats and other small pets are euthanized every year typically because the owners find out they’re not always a good fit for their home, and animal commission members are talking about solutions.

The commission has already been kicking around the idea of banning the sale of small pets in The City and could decide at their meeting Thursday to ask the Board of Supervisors to consider it.

Then the board would have the final say-so.

Commissioners will also hear from zoo officials about current affairs, their animals’ welfare and updates from the past two years at their regular meeting on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.
