Angel investor Ron Conway gifts $40 million to UCSF

Angel tech investor Ron Conway and his family have gifted $40 million to UC San Francisco to help fund the facility's new outpatient medical building in Mission Bay, university officials announced.

In honor of the donation from Conway, wife Gayle, and sons Ronny, Topher and Danny, UCSF is naming the outpatient building the UCSF Ron Conway Family Gateway Medical Building.

The 207,500-square foot facility -- which includes cancer, women's health and pediatric clinics -- is part of the new UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay. The center is set to open Feb. 1 after more than 10 years of planning and construction, though some outpatient services will begin operating Jan. 26.

The facility comprises UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital and UCSF Bakar Cancer Hospital.

Conway is the founder of SV Angel and has worked with hundreds of startups including Google, Facebook, Airbnb and Twitter. He also supports civic tech organization, as well as College Track, Sandy Hook Promise, Americans for Responsible Solutions, Teach for America, Thorn and Donors Choose.

UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood expressed his gratitude to Conway and his wife for their years of support for the institution.

"This building is significant for the connection it provides between the high-quality medical care patients will receive at our three specialty hospitals as inpatients, and the groundbreaking continuing care they will receive as outpatients," Hawgood said in a statement.

The UCSF Ron Conway Family Gateway Medical Building is expected to draw more than 1,500 outpatient visits daily and serve as a teaching facility for students.
