Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island back with second album

Without a doubt, brazen upstart Andy Samberg is one of the best things about the latest already rock-solid cast of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

Even his ongoing hammering of the same comedic nail, “Laser Cats” (this weekend’s goofy Elton John-bolstered installment: “Laser Cats: The Musical!”) still feels fresh and inventive. And if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll have noticed that his squirrelly — often musical — digital shorts have been piling up, hilarious songs/clips like “I Just Had Sex” (featuring Akon) and “The Creep” (with Nicki Minaj and John Waters). So you knew the time was fast approaching — Samberg’s snarky outfit behind said numbers, The Lonely Island, with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — has finally compiled a second album’s worth of material, “Turtleneck & Chain,” which hits May 10.

The record follows the band’s “Incredibad” debut, and its Emmy-winning “D*** In A Box” with Justin Timberlake (not to mention other hit videos/tracks like “J**z In My Pants” and “I’m On A Boat”).

As a digital single, “I Just Had Sex” has already gone Gold, and The Lonely Island just performed it live, with Akon and The Roots, on the 2011 Comedy Awards, which airs next Sunday on Comedy Central.

“Turtleneck & Chain,” boasting an appropriately deadpan cover shot of the guys in retro-’60s Raybans and turquoise turtlenecks, is preceded by a brand-new single, aptly dubbed “We’re Back!”
