America’s finest targeted: Law enforcement officers being killed at high rate

WHAT: During the first three months of 2011, 48 American police officers were killed on duty — a 17 percent increase from 2010. Twenty-three of those deaths were by gunfire, a 53 percent jump.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: Attorney General Eric Holder called 2010 the deadliest year for law enforcement in nearly two decades, with 162 officers killed. This year is on track to be even worse.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Justice Department officials are meeting with law enforcement authorities nationwide to explore solutions, such as federal grant programs to buy bulletproof vests.
