America’s Cup trophy taking posh trip to SF

The coveted America’s Cup — which Larry Ellison and his world-class sailing team won Sunday on behalf of The City’s Golden Gate Yacht Club — will take a first-class trip to its new home.

The Cup will be flown on United Airlines on Friday from Valencia, Spain, where Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing team tamed the winds to win the world’s oldest sports trophy.

From the airport, GGYC Commodore Marcus Young said the trophy will ride in its own BMW — the BMW by which it will travel while it’s with GGYC — and be escorted to the club for a private celebration Friday.

A public celebration of the win will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at City Hall.
