All-staff Rec and Park meeting to talk layoffs

Every employee in the Recreation and Park Department is invited to a meeting today to talk about potential layoffs and other budget concerns.

Rec and Park has to submit a budget to Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office by Friday that cuts $12.4 million out of its $33.4 million general fund.

Employees have been told Rec and Park is cutting $2 million through personnel, but that includes vacancies that won’t be filled, tightening recreation hours, reorganizing positions and attrition – not just layoffs, a union spokeswoman said.

The all-staff meeting is at 1 p.m. in the County Fair Building at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way.

Rec and Park employs about 850 people.
