Alcohol suspected factor in single-car crash that injured five

Five people were injured in a car crash Thursday night when a South City resident suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol crashed into a signal light and San Bruno Mountain in Colma, police said.

Traveling with four male passengers at 11:35 p.m., Allan Smyth, 29, was speeding westbound on Lawndale Avenue when he hit a signal-light pole at Hillside Boulevard and drove his Pontiac sedan into the side of the mountain, according to police.

Police said Smyth may have been under the influence of alcohol.

Smyth and another passenger were hospitalized at San Francisco General Hospital for internal injuries, said police. Three passengers were also transported to the hospital and treated for lesser injuries.

Police said the crash damage will require major construction.
