Adrenaline-charged punk quartet Off! schedules Bay Area shows

Sure, they sound like a rather well-known mosquito repellent. But Off! is actually a new punk-rock supergroup whose new blast of hardcore adrenaline – the self-explanatory “First Four EPs” release on Vice – could stun a cupboardful of cockroaches dead on sheer sonic force alone.

They’ll rattle the rafters on the Eagle Tavern on April 21, and on 924 Gilman in Berkeley the 22nd. What’s so special about this particular lineup? Just this: It features legendary Black Flag/Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris, Redd Kross’s Steven McDonald, Dmitri Coats from the Burning Brides, and Mario Rubalcaba of Hot Snakes/Rocket From The Crypt renown.

The quartet came together in 2009, when Coats was ostensibly starting production work on a new Circle Jerks album, the band’s first in 14 years. In their down time, Coats and Morris started firing off demos, tracks that were so powerful they warranted a new spinoff combo, and Off! was born.

And the group hasn’t forgotten its punk/vinyl roots – for Record Store Day this Saturday they’re releasing a four-song 7”, “Live At Generation Records.” Currently, fans can download a live-at-Amoeba cut, “Panic Attack,” at www.amoeba.com. For anyone wondering what happened to all that proto-punk energy of the late ‘70s, early ‘80s, the answer is here: Off! is your salvation.
