A new Burmese superstar comes to San Carlos

Rangoon Ruby's unique take on Burmese cuisine has proved so popular after its rookie year in Palo Alto it has already opened up a sequel in San Carlos. The San Francisco pedigree is there, with the chef and owners formerly of The City's beloved Burma Superstar. It'll take a few visits to make your way through the lengthy menu featuring many of Burma's signatures, an exciting array of dishes influenced by neighboring India, Thailand and China. Popular starters include vegetarian samosas, an alluring tea leaf salad and the epic two-dozen-ingredient rainbow salad. Burma's national dish, monk hingar (pureed catfish chowder), is here, as are Rangoon lemongrass stew, the coconut chicken noodle dish nan gyi dok and several vegetarian choices. Round out the meal with one of the Tiki-inspired cocktails and sweet black sticky rice with mango ice cream for dessert.

Half Moon Bay

• Its coy marine-blue cottage exterior along Main Street just looks like it was destined to be a seafood shack. However, Half Moon Bay's new Fish 'n' Frites isn't just any old chippy. The offerings at this place here are a little more high-end. There are many choices to be made when designing your perfect fish and frites: Would you prefer cod, monkfish, halibut or shrimp? Which batter would you like the fish fried in — options include beer and cornmeal — and what oil would you like your frites cooked in (rice bran, peanut or canola)? Then there's the all-important decision regarding which of the 25 dipping sauces you want for your frites. Depending on your fish choice, your fish and frites will weigh in between $10 and $20. Sounds like the perfect summer beach-day lunch.

Palo Alto

• Meanwhile, San Francisco's Pizzeria Delfina previously announced it would be opening its first operation outside The City in Burlingame around early fall. Now the Peninsula has more reason to get excited about an autumn full of fresh-stretched mozzarella and the Neapolitan-style pizza with last weeks announcement that a Palo Alto Pizzeria Delfina branch will open around the same time. It will replace the recently closed Empire Tap Room on the same block as fellow San Francisco transplant Tacolicious. Expect a similar menu to the San Francisco pizzerias. Current plans include a full liquor license.
