A decade of officer-involved shootings

As the Police Department weighs the option of using tasers as a “less-lethal” use of force, the Police Commission will explore officer-involved shootings in the last decade.

The San Francisco Police Department has investigated, or is in the process of investigating, 55 shootings since 2000 involving a department-issued firearm.

Of those, nine were considered to be out of policy for the department. The out-of-policy shootings include several police officers killing themselves with their own gun. Others include accidental discharges.

Four shootings, all from 2009, are still under investigation.
