50 to life for suspect in San Francisco socialite slaying

Socialite publicist Kate Horan’s alleged killer is expected to plead guilty to murder Tuesday, with a sentence of 50 years to life in prison as part of a deal with San Francisco prosecutors.

Gary Scott Holland, 44, wouldn’t be eligible for parole until he turns 92 -- if he accepts the deal -- but will avoid the possibility of facing the death penalty, according to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office.

The murder was one of The City's more shocking and horrific. Prosecutors said Holland posed as a utility worker checking for a gas leak at a Russian Hill apartment building. He knocked on random doors, including Horan’s. She answered. Her body was found early the next morning.

Horan was beaten with a pry bar, a construction tool similar to a small crowbar, and stabbed with a knife, prosecutors said.

Holland is also accused of robbing her and attempting to rape her before killing her.
