49ers party at UCSF Children's Hospital prom

Members of the San Francisco 49ers joined with more than 200 pediatric patients Friday at UC San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay to celebrate prom night.

All of the patients who participated have chronic, serious conditions. The 49ers were decked out in prom finery to greet guests, pinning on a corsages and boutonnieres, in addition to posing for pictures and mingling with parents.

Suzanne Leigh, UCSF public-information officer, said the event was important for the youths because some missed their high school prom, because they were in treatment. Leigh said parents were ushered upstairs during the event to give the partients a sense of independence. “These kids crave a normal teen experience, and this is what they are getting,” Leigh said.

Leigh also said the youth appreciated the presence of the 49ers, calling them “gracious guests” who showed “great sincerity.”

“They really gave it 100 percent,” Leigh said.
