As football fans reported more camaraderie than heckling at Candlestick Park on Sunday, a surge in arrests and ejections may have stemmed from the presence of more police.

Five more arrests were made before and during the 49ers’ appearance in the NFC Championship Game than when 24 people were arrested during the prior week’s divisional playoff game.

More officers were stationed at the stadium — including some dressed as New York Giants fans. Officials said the increase stemmed from complaints by visiting New Orleans Saints fans about their experience a week before.

Sgt. Michael Andraychak said 29 people were arrested Sunday, compared to 24 on Jan. 15. And 110 people were ejected Sunday compared to 57 the prior week.

Andraychak said the late start to the game, alcohol consumption and a zero-tolerance policy added to the increase in police activity, but beer sales were cut off at halftime instead of after the third quarter because of a rowdy crowd.

The only major incident Sunday was that a man was arrested for threatening a uniformed officer. The man, whose 2-year-old child was with him, also was charged with child endangerment. Another arrest stemmed from an assault on an officer.

Undercover cops in Giants clothing did report heckling in the stands. Those fans were ejected for rowdy behavior.

But 49ers fan Jeff Vizgart of Santa Rosa said this time around he saw more handshakes and congratulations than heckling.

“Maybe we were just really sad, not hyped like when we won,” Vizgart said.

Most visitors said 49ers fans were welcoming — if vocal.

One thing Giants fans did notice was the support the 49ers had from their fans.

“I’ve been to Green Bay, which was loud, but this was really loud,” said Dan Pericone of Roselle, N.J.
