3-Minute Interview: Ryan Dungey

The 18-year-old motocross star leads the Supercross Lites Class standings with 72 points, and is in The City for Saturday’s THQ American Motorcycle Series event at AT&T Park. Dungey, a Minnesota native, has won two races this season, including one last week in Anaheim.

You’re only in your second year. Are you surprised with how much success you’ve had? I felt like last year was a learning year and this year the goal was to be that guy on the top, that guy in the driver’s seat. Now I just need to keep working hard and continue to be smart out there.

How did you get started riding? I got into it when I was about 5. The thing is that in Minnesota it gets so cold you can’t really do it year-round, so I would go snowboarding and do other things as well. But once I realized I had an opportunity to be pretty good as a rider, I got completely dedicated. It’s just eat, sleep and ride, and I love it.

Do you ever still just go out and ride for run? You know, it’s never really been that way for me. I was never really going out and playing around in the hills. I always need to have a purpose, and that’s to keep learning and get better and better. When I’m at the track, it’s all business.

The Winter X-Games are going on this weekend in Aspen, Colo. Any chance we’ll see you doing flips in the snow one of these days? I don’t know, those guys are pretty crazy. Probably a little too crazy for me.
