3-Minute Interview: Jack Canfield

The co-creator of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series, and a contributor to “The Secret,” a popular self-help book, will host a special training workshop March 13 at the Marriott Airport Hotel in Burlingame.

What prompted your involvement in the self-help field? I started out as a high school teacher in inner-city Chicago and realized quite quickly that my students weren’t that motivated. I realized their self-esteem was very low, so I went to a seminar by W. Clement Stone to learn more on achievement motivation. I brought back those lessons to my class, and the students really started excelling.

Have you changed or modified your approach over the years? I’ve gotten deeper and more nuanced, but the basic ideas are still the same — people have unlimited potential, and we can realize that by controlling our self-thought, owning our emotions, taking action and visualizing positive things.

What will the Saturday workshop focus on? This will focus on taking 100 percent responsibility for your life. Everyone has a life purpose and everyone is uniquely different, so we’ll talk about creating a vision for an ideal life, and using affirmations and visualizations to create momentum and motivation for achieving those goals.
