3-Minute Interview: Gail Gilman

The new executive director of Community Housing Partnership was selected to the post by the nonprofit’s board of directors after a nationwide search. The organization works to reduce homelessness.

What is Community Housing Partnership? It was formed in 1990 through a coalition of housing developers and homeless activists ... We develop our housing vis-à-vis buying land and building it or by buying and building and rehabilitating it.

What do tenants pay generally? Tenants pay 30 percent of their income toward rent. A single adult on Social Security is paying somewhere around $240.

To get this housing, do they have to get a job? Seventy-five percent of our tenants who want to be employed find employment through our program.

Are The City’s homeless polices working? The mayor’s commitment to supportive housing and the fact that he’s brought on hundreds of units is definitely a part of the solution. When we are facing a huge economic crisis, it’s real easy to say that we should be focusing our resources or our tax dollars on something else.
