26th and Valencia to stay closed through rush hour

The intersection of 26th and Valencia streets in the Mission District will remain closed at least through this evening's rush hour as crews replace a broken section of a water main, according to a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman.

An exception is being made for San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency buses, which will be able to go through the intersection, utilities commission spokesman Tony Winnicker said.

The break on the 80-year-old, 16-inch main on 26th Street occurred atabout 4 a.m., Winnicker said. Once it was determined where the break was officials shut down that section of the main at about 7 a.m., he said.

Water pressure that slowed down or stopped was restored to the area by about 7:15 a.m., according to Winnicker.

The exact cause of the break is unknown, but there tend to be more breaks during the winter, he said.
