25,000 US airport security breaches recorded since 9/11

WHAT: Since November 2001 — when extra security measures were established in response to 9/11 — Transportation Security Administration statistics show that more than 25,000 security breaches were tallied at U.S. airports.

HOW: More than 14,000 people found their way into restricted airport areas and about 6,000 travelers got past government screeners without adequate scrutiny. This averages to five security breaches at each of the 457 commercial airports annually.

EXCUSES: The TSA called these breaches “a tiny fraction of 1 percent” of more than 5.5 billion people it screened in 10 years, and said the numbers are misleading because security breaches are too broadly defined.
