22-year-old man shot in car near University of San Francisco

A 22-year-old San Francisco man is expected to recover after being shot numerous times late Monday near the University of San Francisco campus, and then driving himself to a nearby police station, police said.

Police said the victim was shot while sitting in his car at about 11:25 p.m. at Temescal Terrace and Turk Boulevard.

Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said the man drove himself to Geary Boulevard and Seventh Avenue, where he called police, and then continued on to the Richmond police station around the corner on Sixth Avenue where ambulances picked him up.

He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital in serious condition with at least five gunshot wounds to the torso, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police.

“We have what I think are good investigative leads,” said Cmdr. Rich Corriea. “We haven’t sorted out exactly who’s involved in this thing, but it’s not a random act.” He added that the victim was believed to have a connection to the neighborhood.

Esparza said investigators found bullet casings strewn about the crime scene, and parked vehicles in the area were also hit by bullets.

A handgun-toting man believed responsible for the shooting is still on the loose, according to police.

Esparza said a gray vehicle was seen fleeing the scene.

Tom Glendening, a USF engineer, had just come out to his car, which was parked in the area that night, when police informed him that the shooting victim had sideswiped his vehicle leaving the area.

“My car had been pushed in front of someone’s driveway,” he said.

The neighborhood has seen violence before, including two other shootings about a block away, but both Corriea and Glendening said those incidents were the exception, and not the rule.

In December, a 21-year-old alleged pot dealer traded gunfire with four robbers who raided his home in the 2500 block of Golden Gate Avenue, police said.

In August 2008, an 18-year-old man and a 34-year-old man were found shot to death in a Champagne-colored Mazda parked in the 2400 block of Golden Gate Avenue.
