A Potrero Hill school was briefly locked down Monday following a report that an eighth-grader had a gun on campus, police said.

A staffer at International Studies Academy at 655 De Haro St. called police about 11:15 a.m. to report that a 12-year-old boy had brought a gun onto campus, although it was not clear if anyone had seen the weapon.

When the student was brought to the principal’s office and told police were being called, he fled from the school, Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

Responding officers found the boy, who had left school grounds but was not in possession of a gun. However, Manfredi said, officers also found a handgun during their search and are currently investigating whether the boy had ditched the weapon.

Investigators have not said where police found the boy or the weapon. He remained in police custody Tuesday afternoon, Manfredi said.

No injuries were reported at the school, which serves students in grades six through 12.
