An estimated $2.7 million in budget cuts to HIV care and prevention next year will likely be avoided under a new proposal by Mayor Ed Lee.

Lee announced his intention to backfill the funds as part of his budget proposal to the Board of Supervisors. The announcement was made at a hearing called by Supervisor Scott Wiener to address the upcoming federal budget cuts.

Since 2011, federal budget cuts have led Lee and the Board of Supervisors to backfill more than $20 million in HIV funding.

"I'm thrilled that Mayor Lee is acting to ensure that our safety net for those living with HIV will be maintained and that San Francisco will continue its innovative work to reduce new infections," Wiener said.
