OAKLAND — A matchup of two teams with nothing to lose at the end of injury-plagued seasons saw the Warriors lose to the New Orleans Hornets 83-81 on Tuesday at Oracle Arena.
The Warriors had the lead for most of the fourth quarter, but after Hornets guard Greivis Vasquez tied the game on a layup with a minute left, the Warriors couldn’t score despite two offensive rebounds by Chris Wright.
After Gustavo Ayon blocked Charles Jenkins layup attempt with 5 seconds left, former Warrior Marco Belinelli had his layup attempt goaltended by Wright for the winning score.
Rookie Klay Thompson continued his hot scoring streak with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting in just 27 minutes. Fellow rookie Jeremy Tyler scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds in nearly 40 minutes, his most extensive action of the season.
Belinelli led the Hornets with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Both teams had regular starters out for the game; David Lee (groin), Stephen Curry (ankle) and Andrew Bogut (ankle) remain sidelined for the Warriors, and Jarrett Jack (foot), Eric Gordon (back) and Emeka Okafor (knee) all sat out for the Hornets.
The Warriors will close out their season on Thursday when they host the San Antonio Spurs.
NOTE: Jenkins tied a season high for assists in a quarter with seven in the first. He finished with 10 in the game to go with his 10 points.
