Young girl shot in leg at Chinatown playground

A 5-year-old girl was inexplicably shot in the leg while playing on the monkey bars at a playground in Chinatown Friday night, police said.

The girl felt the bullet pierce her leg while she was with two older friends in a playground located in the courtyard of the Ping Yuen public housing complex on Pacific Avenue around 10:35 p.m., police said. The playground is in an enclosed area within the property.

While on the monkey bars, she felt a sharp pain, fell to the ground and was crying, police said.

Her mother, who told police she was nearby watching the kids play from her apartment, heard her daughter cry and saw her on the ground bleeding from her leg, police Sgt. Troy Dangerfield said.

The child was rushed to Chinese Hospital, where she was in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The girl told investigators that she saw juveniles nearby. Hours after the shooting, a group of minors were detained. One member of the group, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested for gun possession, but was not charged for the shooting, Dangerfield said.

Cops are still hunting for a shooting suspect, he said.
