World Cup brings the fans together

Soccer fans around the world are currently engrossed in the World Cup, the monthlong global sporting extravaganza that every four years captivates aficionados from Amsterdam to the Ivory Coast. Add San Franciscans to that list, too.

Given the breathtaking diversity of our populace, The City’s watering holes and social clubs have played host in the last week to lively gatherings of San Franciscans passionately cheering on the teams representing their native nations. The U.S. squad lost 3-0 to the Czech Republic in its first game, but Team U.S.A. can still recover with a strong showing against Italy on Saturday. A win against the strong Italians would reignite excitement over the American team’s prospects (though it would surely disappoint the many San Francisco supporters of Forza Azzura) and continue to build the ever-growing American interest in soccer.

The play over the last few days has been thrilling and the sportsmanship impeccable. No matter the outcomes in future contests, San Francisco has taken its place alongside other world capitals in exhibiting a love and appreciation for the beautiful game.
