An elderly woman died from an apparent homicide in Bernal Heights on Friday night after paramedics and police grappled with a knife-wielding suspect who had stabbed himself in the neck, authorities said.

Ingleside police reported that officers responded to the 200 block of Justin Drive at 9:20 p.m. to assist the Fire Department with someone who had a knife. At the time, Fire Department paramedics were trying to revive an unconscious victim at the scene, police said.

The suspect stabbed himself in the neck before “advancing toward the fire crew in a threatening manner,” Ingleside police said in a statement.

Police arrived and helped paramedics strap the suspect to a medical backboard, according to police. The man was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of his wounds.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Medical Examiner’s Office identified her Sunday as Hao Mei Wu, 72, of The City.

Police categorized the attack as a homicide, but no details on how Wu died were released Sunday. Info about the suspect also was unavailable.
