  • A woman accused of shoplifting at a Foods Co. in the Bayview is also accused of swinging an ax at the security guard who confronted her.

An alleged shoplifter had a real ax to grind.

A woman was arrested in the Bayview last week after she reportedly threatened a security guard with an ax after he confronted her about shoplifting at a Foods Co., police said.

The incident occurred Feb. 4 about 2:12 p.m. at the grocery store in the 300 block of Williams Avenue. The security guard on duty told police he saw the woman take some food items from the store and walked out without paying.

He confronted the woman outside and she pulled out an ax and "waved it around as she threatened" him, police said. The security guard backed away and called police.

Arriving officers found the suspect in the vicinity of Phelps and Vesta streets and placed her under arrest. They found an ax concealed in her waistband.

The suspect, who was reportedly already on probation, was booked on burglary, robbery and probation violation charges.
