Wildfire: Photo gallery, updates

Bay Area residents have been watching closely as firefighters try to contain an 817-acre wildfire in Los Angeles that has consumed one-fifth of that city's sprawling Griffith Park. The blaze is a reminder of the 1,520-acre Oakland Hills firestorm that killed 25 people and destroyed almost 3,000 homes including apartments and condominiuims on both sides of the Caldecott Tunnel in October 1991.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told reporters last night that firefighters are closer to gaining some control over the Griffith Park fire, which is the third this year in the dry Hollywood Hills.
