A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a Muni train at the Civic Center Station on Monday morning.

The man, a white male between 50 and 60 years old, made contact with the train at about 11:30 a.m., according to Muni spokesman Paul Rose. It’s still unclear if the man was on the platform or the train tracks. He was transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after, Rose said.

The San Francisco Police Department and Muni are jointly investigating the incident to determine just how the man was struck, Rose said. The man was not on the tracks at the time of the incident, according to Rose.

Underground Muni service was shut down for two hours between the West Portal and Embarcadero stations. Bus shuttles replaced the trains during that closure.
