Website urges Mayor Ed Lee to run for mayor

A new website run by two former San Francisco supervisors is calling for city residents to sign a petition to urge Mayor Ed Lee to run for mayor in November.

The idea is to create a grass roots campaign that will resonate with Lee, according to former Supervisor Michael Yaki. Along with former Supervisor Jim Gonzalez, Yaki is running the website and getting the word out.

“Putting the usual suspects in the same room and telling him why he needs to run for mayor just won’t work with Ed Lee,” Yaki said. “That’s not the kind of guy he is. He wants to return to his old job and to his family, but he also has a deep commitment to The City.”

The website coincides with a poll being conducted by a mystery financier that asks voters their opinion on Lee’s performance. Yaki said he and Gonzalez have nothing to do with the poll and that they are not raising any money for the cause.

“We have not asked a single person for a dime,” Yaki said.

Lee, for his part, has consistently denied he has any plans for running for office.
