Ryan Vogelsong can accomplish two things today that seemed out of reach a few years ago when he was toiling in Japan: earn his second straight All-Star bid and pick up his eighth victory of the 2012 season for the Giants.
Vogelsong is scheduled to the take the mound for the Giants when they wrap up a four-game series with the Cincinnati Reds at AT&T Park. It will be San Francisco’s final appearance in The City before the July 9-11 All-Star break.
By the time Vogelsong takes the mound, he’ll know if he’s an All-Star for the second straight year, as rosters will be unveiled this morning.
Last season, the Giants had five All-Star representatives. And after a strong start to 2012, San Francisco’s in line to possibly match that total this year. Pitchers Matt Cain, Vogelsong, Madison Bumgarner and Santiago Casilla all have been terrific in the first half, and catcher Buster Posey, who led all catchers in the NL when the vote count was last released on Tuesday, and outfielder Melky Cabrera appear to be shoo-ins.
As for Vogelsong, the right-hander certainly has a worthy résumé, posting a 7-3 record in 14 starts with a 2.23 ERA, among the best in the majors. The only factor that could work against him is the fact he’s surrounded by a bevy of All-Star caliber arms and every team from the NL needing a representative.
Vogelsong will be opposed by the Reds’ Bronson Arroyo, who took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning in his most recent start. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m.
NOTE: Prior to today’s Giants-Reds game, the Giants will honor the 2002 team which won the NL pennant before losing to the Angels in the World Series. More than 30 members of the 2002 team are expected to join the reunion, including Rich Aurilia, Marvin Bernard, Barry Bonds, Jason Christiansen, Shawon Dunston, Scott Eyre, Pedro Feliz, Ryan Jensen, Jeff Kent, Kenny Lofton, Ramon Martinez, Damon Minor, Bill Mueller, Calvin Murray, Felix Rodriguez, Kirk Rueter, Reggie Sanders, Benito Santiago, Jason Schmidt, J.T. Snow, Jay Witasick, Tim Worrell and Chad Zerbe.
