A box of flares were found and detonated Sunday afternoon near Fort Funston, a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area near Lake Merced, according to police and park officials.
The flares, which had U.S. Navy markings on them, had floated up in the water near Fort Funston on Sunday, Golden Gate National Recreation Area spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet said.
San Francisco police bomb specialists were called in to manage the flares, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
