“It was a goal, or it was a handball and we should have got a penalty,” U.S coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “It’s a friendly game so I don’t want to make a big deal of it. But you have to ask why we are in 2013 and have no goal line technology. It’s just a joke.”
The U.S. finished the year with a team-record 16 victories and qualified for its seventh straight World Cup.
Portugal into World Cup: Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dazzling hat trick to send Portugal into the 2014 World Cup finals at the expense of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s Sweden, while France advanced by conjuring a remarkable turnaround against Ukraine. There was disappointment in the playoffs for Iceland, however, after the Nordic country failed in its bid to become the least populous nation to reach football’s biggest stage after losing to Croatia on a thrilling final night in European qualification. The list of African qualifiers was completed with Ghana advancing 7-3 on aggregate over Egypt despite a 2-1 loss in Cairo and Algeria progressing on away goals at the expense of Burkino Faso. Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon had already won their playoffs.
MLS to expand to Orlando: Orlando City Soccer has become Major League Soccer’s next expansion franchise. MLS commissioner Don Garber announced the franchise agreement with Orlando City at a community celebration near the site where a new downtown stadium will be constructed.
