Last season, it took the Urban High School girls’ basketball team 10 games to get its first win.
This season, it only took one.
Led by seniors Carly Kuperschmid and Jenna Waldman, who scored 14 points apiece, the Blues defeated visiting Fremont Christian 60-24 in their season opener Monday at Kezar Pavilion.
After last year’s struggles and finishing with only five wins, coach Hope Broadus said the game showed that her team was ready for a new season.
“There is a new, revived intensity that the team has this year,” said Broadus, who is starting her third season at the helm of the program. “We have a new man-to-man offense that I think actually improved our man-to-man defense.”
Urban features nine returning players that include eight seniors and junior forward Charlotte Blanc.
After captain Lilly Burns graduated, Blanc, who finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds in Monday’s win, is excited to take on a leadership role and said that there’s a new confidence with the team.
“Last year, I think we had a bad attitude and we weren’t quite excited coming into the season, and this year, we are ready to play,” she said.
The Blues got out to an early 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and never slowed down.
“We had goals going in and mine was just to play as hard as I possibly can,” Blanc said.
With an 11-point lead going into halftime, Urban came out in the second half and held Fremont Christian to only one field goal and outscored them 20-4 in the third quarter. In the third, Urban connected on four 3-pointers, two by Kuperschmid and one each from by Victoria Valeshea and Zoe Elkins.
Even though Urban never fell behind and won by its biggest margin since December when it defeated Leadership by 37, Blanc knows there is a lot to improve on in the young season.
“I think we need to improve on communication,” she said. “It has always been our shortcoming, but this year, [we are] coming into it a lot stronger.”
Urban will play its next game Thursday when it hosts Waldorf at Kezar Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.
