“The Wizard of Oz: The Official 75th Anniversary Companion” is chock-full of new and rare info about a movie that, frankly, has been covered to death.
It was a formidable task, but the authors uncovered trivia items such as merchandizing ploys at the film’s release involving “Oz the Wonderful Peanut Spread,” and World War II troops singing “We’re Off to See the Wizard” as a morale boost as they headed into battle.
There’s also drunken Munchkin lore, rare photo stills and casting tidbits — for example, nearly everyone cast was the producer’s second or third choice.
Apparently there were a ton of Judy Garland haters. She’s lucky there wasn’t a Change.org back then.
