“I think we just needed to come together and get some energy going,” University outside hitter Jaelah Hutchison said. “Through warmups, it didn’t really happen as much as we wanted and by the second and third game we pulled it around.”
The Red Devils (13-5, 4-1 BCL-West) have won three straight matches and sit in second place in the BCL West, just behind Marin Catholic, and have a quick turnaround with a match against Urban this afternoon.
“It gets us a little more momentum,” Hutchison said. “We really needed this win. We have Urban [today], so we’re going to come out a lot stronger just from this.”
University got off to a sluggish start in the first set, but stayed in striking distance by way of a pair of Lick-Wilmerding service errors. With Lick (8-12, 0-5) leading 10-9, Hutchison took over. She had three kills as part of an 8-1 run that put University up 17-11.
After a timeout, Lick roared back with a 5-0 run to cut the University lead to one, but again it was Hutchison who put a stop to it with one of her five first-set kills.
She finished with a match-high 14 kills on the night.
University took the second set with relative ease, but found itself struggling again in the third.
Lick’s Rebecca Green had a pair of kills which sparked a small run to put the Tigers up 10-7, forcing University to call a timeout.
The Red Devils came out firing out of the timeout and, once again, it was led by Hutchison.
She had four kills and two blocks during a 13-1 spurt that gave University a commanding 20-11 lead on the way to the 25-16 win.
“We really just wanted to discuss how we could improve, how we finish the ball, how we communicate with the setter, even just getting more swings on the ball,” Hutchison said.
