A fire in an underground vault was quickly extinguished Wednesday afternoon in the Financial District, fire and PG&E officials said.

Firefighters responded at 2:23 p.m. to reports of smoke and flames coming from underneath a maintenance hole cover at 505 Montgomery St., a fire official said.

PG&E crews also responded to the scene where the fire had been extinguished, utility spokesman Joe Molica said.

Molica said no outages had been reported in the area and that a preliminary investigation indicates the fire did not involve PG&E’s electrical system.

He said crews remained at the scene Wednesday afternoon to investigate the fire. No injuries were reported.
