UC Berkeley alum Rob Solomon is president of Groupon, a website that organizes and promotes discounts for group events. Groupon has a strong presence in San Francisco, where 250,000 residents have accessed the site, taking advantage of over $15 million in deals.
What’s an example of why Groupon has been so successful in San Francisco? I think a good example of this is the Conservatory of Flowers. It’s such an iconic place, but a ton of people never really think of going there. We did an event there, created some awareness, and ended up selling package deals to 2,758 people.
What have been some other popular Groupon programs in San Francisco? There is an indoor skydiving center in Union City that we sold nearly 3,000 packages for. I don’t think many people from San Francisco would normally travel to Union City, but that dream of skydiving is quite the lure.
Did Groupon initially consider expanding to San Francisco when it launched in Chicago in 2008? We always had plans to expand to San Francisco and the rest of the Bay Area. The region is not only an epicenter for technology, but it’s also a major metro area featuring some really exciting cities.
