Trio of Bay Area golfers named to U.S. Walker Cup team

Three Bay Area players will be representing the United States in the Walker Cup.

Cal's Michael Kim and Max Homa and Stanford's Patrick Rodgers were three of the five members of the U.S. team announced Wednesday by the United States Golf Association. Alabama's Justin Thomas and Cory Whitsett were also named to the team.

The Walker Cup is a biennial 10-man amateur team competition between the U.S. and a team composed of players from Great Britain and Ireland.

"I have no doubt that every one of these young men is ready for the challenge presented by the team from Great Britain and Ireland," USGA vice president Tom O'Toole said in a statement.

Homa won the NCAA individual championship to close out his Cal career and Kim won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the NCAA Division I Player of the Year as part of historic year for the Bears. Rodgers is a returning Walker Cup team member, having competed in 2011.

The rest of the U.S. team will be announced later this summer.

The 44th Walker Cup will be held Sept. 7-8 at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, N.Y.
