An 18-year-old man allegedly used a tomahawk as a weapon after he was caught burglarizing a car in the Sunset district last weekend, police said Tuesday.

About 1:10 a.m. Saturday, a 28-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were walking back to their car in the 1500 block of 25th Avenue and came upon Anton Vasilkov rummaging through their trunk, Officer Albie Esparza said.

A struggle ensued between Vasilkov and the 28-year-old man, Esparza said, and at one point during the brawl Vasilkov hurled a tomahawk at the victim. The axe reportedly skipped off the ground and struck the male victim in the shin, causing cuts and scrapes.

Vasilkov also punched the man but the victim managed to hold Vasilkov down while the woman called 911.  Police arrived and detained Vasilkov without further incident, Esparza said.

He was booked on numerous charges including assault with a deadly weapon, auto burglary, possession of stolen property, and possession of burglary tools.
