Therapy, a furniture shop that has operated on Valencia Street for over a decade, is planning close this month because it says it cannot afford a rent hike, Uptown Almanac reports
The 1,750-square-foot building at 541 Valencia St. has housed Therapy's flagship furniture store for 13 years. Since its opening, Therapy has expanded to several other locations and opened a clothing store in a retail space next to its original shop.
Therapy owner Wayne Whelan told Uptown Almanac that his landlord raised his rent from $5,700 per month to $10,500 — an 84 percent increase that Whelan could not afford.
However, Therapy's clothing store will remain on Valencia Street, and Whelan hopes to move the furniture store to a location in Alameda. Therapy's Valencia location will close Aug. 29.
The move comes as Valencia Street retailers fight being pushed from the shopping strip by chain stores and high rents. Although local business owners appear to have triumphed in their struggle to keep Jack Spade, a men's clothing line designed by high-end retailer Kate Spade, out of the Mission, businesses are still being pushed out.
As Uptown Almanac notes, vintage store Clothes Contact is leaving its Valencia Street location
sometime this fall.
