Peter Bjorn and John studio whiz Bjorn Yttling raved about her in our feature on the Swedish supergroup this week. And one listen is all it takes to understand why he’s chosen her as his next production assignment — Michigan-bred, Big Apple-based singer-songwriter Alex Winston is all set to be the next big breakout star of 2011.
Winston sounds like a more operatic Kate Bush, looks like Larraine Newman after discovering a Goth-rock makeup kit, and has a quirky, campy sensibility that’s already been favorably compared to that of Britain’s showstopping Florence (Florence And The Machine) Welch.
A mini-LP, “Sister Wife,” is already available for preorder via her MySpace page, with a full album to follow on Island/Def Jam later this year.
But you can catch Winston in full theatrical effect on her kooky “Sister Wife” video, premiering at www.stereogum.com.
Like a chipmunk on helium, and sporting only a man’s baggy dress shirt, she chirps out the earworm chorus — “Hey there, sister wife/get the hell out, it’s my life” — while a boa constrictor slithers to and fro and a white Persian cat lolls about. It ends with a stand-in feline puppet vomiting fake blood all over Winston’s stoic face — Lady Gaga, watch your VH1-clip back. And in addition to Yttling, Winston already has a cavalcade of collaborators, including production duo The Knocks for her debut and Ladyhawke and the Beach Fossils, who’ve remixed tracks like “Locomotive.”
Board her train now, as it’s just chugging out of the station!
