The developers’ guy in PG

Wealthy Virginia developers want Rushern Baker to be the county executive in Prince George’s County — that’s the only conclusion to draw from my colleague Hayley Peterson’s reporting that Baker has a 10-to-1 advantage over his nearest opponent on the score of raising funds from developers.

I blog this here not so much as a local item as a reflection of a national story — the political clout of real estate developers.

Developers were the ones in Virginia lobbying for tax hikes that would go to build new roads — making you pave their driveway as Ken Cuccinelli put it. Developers were the ones in new Mexico profiting from Bill Richardson’s “public-private partnerships” while funding his campaigns.

So, if you’re interested in corporate welfare and money in politics, keep an eye on PG County.
