Teenager attacked while shooting hoops in Chinatown

A boy was ambushed by six thugs while he was playing basketball in Chinatown on Wednesday, police said.

The 15-year-old victim was in a playground in the 800 block of Sacramento Street around 3:30 p.m. shooting hoops with a 14-year-old friend when he was assaulted from behind by the thugs, described as six other juveniles in their late teens, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

All the suspects, five boys and one girl, began striking the victim several times before fleeing, police said. The 14-year-old playmate was not attacked.

A witness told police that the attack seemed random, Esparza said.

The victim sustained an injury to his head and was taken to the hospital, although police say his condition is not life threatening.
