The irksome Muni practice of turning around trains before they have reached their final destinations is becoming significantly less common.
During March, Muni recorded 185 switchbacks, a six-month low and a mark that represents a 30 percent reduction from its January total of 264. The most progress was made on the L-Taraval line, where switchbacks were reduced from 54 in January to 25 in March. The M-Ocean View had the fewest recorded switchbacks, with just 12 reported last month, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni.
SFMTA officials have said switchbacks are essential to helping clear up traffic jams and delays on other parts of its transit system. However, passengers have voiced displeasure with the practice, and The City’s Board of Supervisors has held several hearings examining the need for switchbacks.
Last year, Muni said it would not switch back any train unless there was another one trailing less than five minutes behind.
